Why Skinny Jeans Are Always a Symbol of the Music Industry

We just want to briefly go through what skinny jeans, what is their history and where they fit into the fashion of today.

Skinny jeans are, just like the name suggests made to make you look thin, maybe even thinner than you really are. They are also known as slim fit pants for this reason. They differ from drainpipe jeans in that they taper at the bottom of the leg rather than just go down straight which makes them much less baggy. In fact there is often a zip at the bottom to make it easier to actually get them on over your feet.

There are several other names for them including cigarette pants, slim pants, skinny pants, skinnies, pencil pants and stovepipes. All these names emphasize the tightness of the fit.

This style of jeans originated back in the 1950s and one of the first to wear them and make a big fashion statement was Elvis Presley. In fact they were probably a major factor in giving rock and roll the bad boy image which it still has to a certain extent.

Since then for many years they were always very closely related to music in some way. Country music stars wore them as well as many famous bands including the Beatles. They were the dress of the teddy boys who were the baddies and were very different to the flower power clothes of the goodies.

Some people used to put black skinny jeans on and then get into a bath of water so that they could shrink them to be an even tighter fit. Such was the need to get them as tight as possible.

The style faded outside the music scene a little in the last decade of the 20th century where people tended to favor the more baggy jeans which have always been around but worn for more practical purposes rather than as a fashion statement.

They have made a come back in the 2000s mainly led through indie bands which has led to them again becoming a very popular garment. They are one of the few fashion accessories that appeal as much to men as to women. Apart from black, you can now get them in many colors and sizes.

Skinny jeans are not suitable for everyone however. It is fair to say that if you are of the fuller figure to start with, they will not look right when you wear them. You have to be pretty skinny to start with.

The same applies to what you wear with them. It might be an idea to wear something baggier on your top to balance the effect out a bit. They look good tucked into long boots and this have the effect of making you look taller than you actually are. If you are already tall and skinny, the world is your oyster. You can wear whatever you like with your stylish skinny jeans.
